Children of Migrant Farm Workers - Program Information

How Is First 5 California Helping the Children of Migrant Farm Workers?

First 5 California's goal is to improve access to health care and early education for one of the most isolated populations in the state- the children of California's farm workers. Regardless of where they or their parents were born, and regardless of the kind of work their parents do, First 5 California is working to ensure that all children have access to early learning, healthcare, school readiness and special needs services.

First 5 California's four-year $10 million California Children of Migrant Farm Workers Project is creating programs in partnership with agencies who are already established in the migrant farm worker community to make sure that these children are not left behind.

First 5 California is funding MEES in 23 Migrant Education Regions in 46 counties with Migrant Education programs to:

  • Improve early education services, with an emphasis on early literacy for children through center and home based programs
  • Enhance parenting education and services, with an emphasis on literacy for parents
  • Expand child care services, especially during the nontraditional hours that best suit a farm worker family's schedule
  • Build additional capacity to serve more of the eligible population by increasing the number of available childcare slots
  • Provide transportation and access to services in isolated rural settings
